I have been procrastinating about painting a scene on a large canvas board. I worry about getting the proportions and colours right.
I decided it had to be done before I depart for my holiday on February 11th.
This morning I took the plunge and got stuck into it.
I saved the subject photo as a screen saver on my computer
I did about 5 art classes early 2019. Since then it has been self directed learning and getting some tips from fellow bloggers and of course the internet. I have to remind myself that I am not a professional painter and cannot expect perfection. I also have to remind myself that my painting does not have to be exactly the same as the photo and I am allowed to adapt it to suit myself. Self Expression.
Here is my painting so far
I am happy with this. While this is drying I will practice drawing the church on scraps of paper. The snow and bushes will be easy to do.
February 3rd…I have been working on the painting off and on today. Still a bit more do with bushes etc and some fine details on the church.
I will finish it by the end of this week.
Masterpiece finished. It might look a tad too busy and a bit out of proportion but it’s for my pleasure and I like it.
Beautiful, the colours are great. You are right, just like a fiction writer, circumstances are adapted to suit your own style. P.S. I guess you know that your subject is Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo in New Zealand π

Thank you so much for kind comment, very encouraging. Yes the Church of The Good Shepherd is my special place. My parents used to live there, I was christened in the little church and years later I was married there ….unfortunately the marriage didn’t last forever.

How wonderful (not the marriage bit of course!) your painting has such extra special meaning.

Great bit of history to have. I guess the landscape around The Church of the Good Shepherd hasn’t changed much.

There have been several changes , firstly as a result of the hydrodam built in 1950 (My father helped build it) , then changes I guess to attract attracting tourist. It was originally named Takapo- Maori name, I am not sure who changed It to Tekapo.

Takapo …taka & po mean, respectively “sleeping mat” and “night”. It was also known as “left in haste in the night”. Apparently two explorers were disturbed in the night, left their bed behind and fled in the dark. …just a bit of history.

That’s fascinating stuff. Didn’t know about the name change but glad the explorers were scared off. Then tourism arrived!

Tourism is encouraged, the little town really needs it. Couples from overseas especially Japan pay big money to get married there.
