Today I needed to learn to paint with arcylics on canvas. I thought the best way would be to practice on smaller boards first and then when I feel confident I can progress to the 11″ x 14″ that I plan to use to paint a dinosaur for my grandsons 5th birthday.
I am happy with my learning today.
Painting is so calming…

Thank you. The info said the canvas was already Gesso Primed. I am wondering whether it’s advisable to put on another coat on a new canvas before using just to be sure.

I never bother to reprime canvas if it’s already bright white. When we made canvases at college we had to make a frame and staple it on, we used white emulsion as primer! I like acrylic because you can build up layers and if it’s good quality you can over paint it. Sometimes cheap acrylic is difficult because it’s too much filler and not enough pigment, then it’s like the difference from using watercolour to using gouache if you know what I mean. Loving your experiments.

Thanks Christine I really appreciate your comments. I did Google the question but was so confused, one artist said give it two coats while another said no. The larger canvas for the dinosaur is primed. I thought about leaving the background white and just painting the dinosaur in bright colours. X

That sounds like a good idea. It depends on if you get good edges. If they are a bit ragged then you might want to paint around it. The trouble with canvas is it catches your brush. Often it depends on how thick the paint is. Slightly wetter makes for neater lines. Too wet and it might run…..

The four canvases that I did today had rough edges. The canvas for the dinosaur has neat even edges, I’m frightened of messing them up that s why I thought I would leave the background as is..

Thank you for the compliment. I did go to a few beginner classes early in the year but had to stop because I relocated and also was having issues with my eyes. I have had one eye fixed and maybe next year I might find another class to go to. I hope you are having a wonderful day. ππΏπΊπ¦π»
