DNA

A couple of years ago I did the DNA test.

Recently updated results indicate estimations of:

65% England, Wales, Northwestern Europe

35% Ireland and Scotland

2% Sweden.

I should mention that both my parents were born in New Zealand and the same for myself and three siblings. My paternal grandfather was from Northern Ireland , my maternal grandfather from Scotland.

I have had several contacts with possible cousins mainly 3rd-5th from both sides of the family.

Today I received a message from a lady asking if I knew certain people because she might be related.

My reply opened up a can of worms so to speak.

It turns out the lady is a 1st cousin to me. My uncle (dad’s brother) had an affair in the 1940s. This lady has 5 half siblings who all grew up nearby her , has never met them. I have met one of her siblings. My new cousin and I have already spoken on the phone tonight. We both live in Australia in different states.

I was able to give her information about our mutual grandparents and other family members.

This is only the start. I now need to find photos etc for her. The good thing is she did have regular contact with her father for the first 16 years of her life. The Lady is now 70, her father passed away in 1988.

I now need to settle my mind and get some sleep.

    1. I agree it is interesting turn of events. It was news to me. My new cousin claims that her birth has been kept quiet until now. I personally won’t be informing any family members as I will leave that up to her if she wishes to do so…

  1. I couldn’t get back in when I was told there was an update. But when I first did it I got an email from a lady who is the grandaughter of my grandmother’s brother who went to Canada many many years ago. So I have lots of Canadian relatives.

  2. Two years ago, I had a cousin show up the same way. However, she was adopted so she never knew any of her birth family. She knew only her father’s initials; with a little thought, we figured out which on of my uncles was her father. He never knew he had this daughter. We’ve met and are are on great terms. She fits into the family like she had grown up with us. However, my uncle didn’t take it so well. Enjoy your new cousin, but let her story with the family develop on its natural course.

    1. Thank you for sharing about your cousin. I am seeing this as new fork in the road in my life’s journey….and of course in a positive way. I sent her scanned photos today of our belated grandparents….she appreciated that.

    1. It is an interesting subject. There are many people that yearn to know about their ancestors, they feel there is something missing in their lives. For me there is so much more to discover but having said that I am happy and content with who I am.

      1. I agree. A lot of unexpected things have happened in my life, plans I had came to a halt which was disappointing. I have learnt to accept my life as it is, enjoy it, be content and happy. πŸ™‚πŸ¦‹πŸŒ»πŸŒΊ
